Hanging pictures and mirrors at home or at work is a quick way to make your home or workplace a more fun and inspiring place to be. But to enjoy your new pictures, they need to stay securely on the wall with the right type of hanging. So, what should you choose? There are many different options, but it doesn’t have to be as difficult as it seems to choose the right option for your wall. We also have more detailed guides where we talk more about hangings for different types of walls, in case you need more information!
Make sure you have everything you need at home before you start, so it will be easier and go faster. Measure where the picture should be placed and make a small mark with a pencil on the wall so you can easily see where to put your hanging. Feel free to use a spirit level when hanging your pictures to ensure they are straight and look neat!
Concrete walls are something most people seem to find tricky, as it often involves more work to hang something on a concrete wall than on another material. But it doesn’t have to be as difficult as it looks. By using the right type of picture hanging for your concrete wall and picture, you ensure that the picture stays properly in place, and you don’t have to worry about it falling and breaking. Your art will stay in place the right way for a long time to come!
If you have lighter or smaller pictures to hang, a so-called concrete hook or picture hook is often enough. A picture hook is a small plastic hook with several pins, which are hammered into the concrete wall. The picture hook comes in several different sizes, with different dimensions for the hook you hang your picture on. For hanging with a picture hook on a concrete wall, you don’t need to drill, and the holes from the pins are very small. All you need is a hammer.
If your picture is heavier or larger, a picture hook may not be enough for the weight. Then you need to use screws and plugs to ensure that the picture stays securely on your concrete wall. For hanging with screws and plugs, you will need to drill into the wall, which will create slightly larger holes, but you don’t have to worry about your picture falling down.
Plasterboard in interior walls is becoming more and more popular, maybe because it’s a fireproof, practical, and sound-insulating material. Hanging pictures on drywall can feel tricky since the sheets are usually no thicker than 13 mm. It may seem like there’s not enough to attach to. But it doesn’t have to be that difficult – with the right type of picture hanging for your drywall, each attachment point can hold many kilos.
If you have smaller and lighter pictures, we recommend using a so-called X-hook. This hook can handle a load of up to 5 kg, which is sufficient for many pictures. The X-hook comes in several sizes with corresponding pins that are nailed in at an angle downward into the wall. This way, you ensure that your picture hanging can handle higher loads. You can also use two X-hooks to distribute the weight if you're worried. The holes in your drywall will be very small, and you don’t need to drill.
If you need to hang heavier pictures, we recommend screws and plugs. A picture hanging like this can usually handle a load of around 10 kg, so you don’t need to worry about your pictures falling. There are different types of screws and plugs for drywall, and they all work equally well. The only exception is if you need to hang something really heavy, in which case we recommend a picture hanging with a metal anchor. For hanging with screws and plugs, you will need to drill, and the holes will be larger, but you ensure your picture stays in place on your drywall.
Even though there are various options to avoid drilling into walls, there may be situations where you don’t want or can’t make any holes in the wall. Perhaps you live in a sublet or a student apartment, want to hang something where it’s hard to drill, or simply don’t want holes in your walls. There are smart alternatives for you too, so you can still have beautiful pictures on your walls without making any holes!
We sell two different systems for hanging pictures without holes. One picture hanging comes from 3M Command, which uses strong Velcro strips, and the other option is a self-adhesive nail from Tesa. The Tesa picture hanging can hold up to 2 kg per nail, while the Command picture hanging comes in various widths and sizes and can be combined to hold up to 5.4 kg.
The adjustable and self-adhesive nail from Tesa is a picture hanging that sticks to the wall with double-sided adhesive strips. It then has an adjustable nail that helps you place the picture at exactly the right height. This picture hanging is specially designed for more sensitive surfaces like wallpaper and drywall.
The picture hanging from 3M Command is a picture hanging with self-adhesive Velcro that sticks to the wall and your frame. This picture hanging is ideal for walls where you don’t want to drill but doesn’t work on damaged or wallpapered walls. In those cases, Tesa’s self-adhesive nail works better.
Choose the picture hanging that suits your wall best and don’t forget to follow the instructions. This way, you can ensure that your pictures not only look great on the wall but also stay in place without falling down.
Choosing the right hanging can still feel difficult even after reading through the information. If you're unsure about which picture hanging to choose for your wall, don’t hesitate to ask someone from our knowledgeable staff or read further in our more detailed guides. We are happy to guide you and help you find the right one – all to ensure that your home or workplace remains a place you enjoy being!
