Hallway decoration - tips and inspiration!
The hall – the first room you see in your home – for both you and your visitors. In other words, it's a very important place. Here are 8 tips on how you can make the hall not only practical and spacious, but also stylish and welcoming.
Hall decoration – tip #1: Optimise storage
Everybody knows how a hall can easily get messy, especially in larger households with children. Generous storage space is therefore of paramount importance when it comes to hall decoration. There's really no such thing as a shoe rack that's too big, and you can never have too many hooks. However, in a relatively small space like the hall, it's necessary to reflect on exactly how you can optimise your storage. The challenges and conditions depend entirely on how the space is shaped and those who live in the household, so you need to think about what is needed in your particular hall. If you have a very cramped hall, you may need to take advantage of the height of the room, such as by having a shoe cupboard high up instead of a shoe rack along the floor. Make sure that you've got space for everything you need – and that there's space left over for a little more. Boxes, baskets, hooks, shelves, drawers and cupboards – maximise the surface!
Hall decoration – tip #2: Give the hall the right lighting
On the one hand, you need good and practical lighting in the hall for those dark winter mornings when you and those you live with have to get going. But on the other hand, you also need some cosier lighting for all those other occasions when you just want to create a welcoming atmosphere. You can do this by putting table lamps – ones which give a warm and atmospheric glow – on a chest of drawers or sideboard, for example.
Hall decoration – tip #3: Create space and functionality with mirrors
A mirror in the hall is almost as much of a given as a bed in the bedroom. A mirror in the hall has the practical function of being the place where you can take a last look at how your clothes sit or how your hair looks before you leave home. It also creates a feeling of space in a room that usually needs it. Whole-body mirrors are the norm in the hall, and recently we've also seen more and more round mirrors here too.
Hall decoration – tip #4: Have a clear-out with the changing seasons
Warm down jackets and other winter clothes take up a lot of space, and there's no reason to have them in the hall from late spring through early autumn. In the same way, there's no point having sandals, light trainers, and denim jackets in the hall from late autumn through to early spring. We recommend, therefore, that you have clear-outs as the season changes, and remove everything you don't need for the current season. Put it in a large wardrobe or, if you don't have one, pack it all up in boxes and put them somewhere easy to access.
Hall decoration – tip #5: Create places to sit
Everybody appreciates being able to sit down while they take off their shoes, especially those who are a little older. It also creates a pleasant and cosy feeling in the hall. Some people combine storage with a bench, and thereby kill two birds with one stone, while others have a simple stool, chair or pouf.
Hall decoration – tip #6: Make small-scale storage possible
It's well known that, like in the rest of the hall, a chest of drawers can easily become messy. Small objects like keys, sunglasses or post, which don't live in the drawers with the scarves and gloves, simply end up lying around. However, you can create a place specifically for them by putting a basket or bowl on top of a chest of drawers. That way, you create a more comfortable and less messy environment in your hall – and you can also find your possessions more easily!
Hall decoration – tip #7: Add pictures and posters for a personal touch
Pictures can be a very attractive part of hall decor. If you have the space for it, a large and eye-catching poster is recommended! Something with a bit of wow-factor which you see as soon as you open the door. The hall is also a great place for picture frames with, for example, family photos or other personal pictures. Regardless of what you choose to put in your picture frames, it will make for a cosier, more personal and inviting atmosphere.
Hall decoration – tip #8: Put up exciting wallpaper
Snazzy wallpaper in the hall is something of a trend. Maybe it's because we feel because the hall is so small, we can really go for it anyway. A colourful or heavily patterned wallpaper is both an attractive and effective ingredient in decorating a hall!
